Dental Exams & Cleanings (Hygiene)
What are Dental Exams and Cleanings?
A dental exam is done in-office as part of your preventative care regimen. The exam checks for signs of tooth decay, oral cancer and other intraoral problems that may go unnoticed otherwise. Cleanings are done by licensed hygienists who work to effectively remove hardened plaque and tartar from the teeth. The hygienist will check for signs of gingivitis and periodontal disease as well as treat these conditions if they are present.
Why do you need Dental Exams and Cleanings?
A dental exam as well as a cleaning are both crucial to the overall health of your mouth. Even with the very best hygiene techniques at home, a professional cleaning can get rid of the hardened calculus and tartar that becomes impossible to remove on your own. Exams help in detecting minor issues so that they are not allowed to get worse. We can create a personalized treatment plan that will help you maintain or obtain a beautiful smile.

What makes you a good candidate for Dental Exams and Cleanings?
Everyone is a good candidate for routine dental exams and cleanings. In fact, it’s never too soon to come into the office for routine care, since we recommend kids start seeing the dentist once their first baby teeth come in. We advise our patients to have bi-annual appointments so that we can monitor their dental health and provide the care that they need. The more that you visit the dentist, the fewer oral-related problems you’ll have.
What can you expect with a routine Dental Exam and Cleaning?
First, you’ll be seen by our hygienist, who will take x-rays of your teeth and begin the cleaning. The cleaning is done gently and effectively removes stains and hardened plaque from the teeth. The hygienist then polishes the teeth to a high shine and flosses between each tooth. The gums are measured to check for signs of both gingivitis as well as gum disease. Next, Dr. Redfearn will come in and perform the exam. The doctor checks for signs of tooth decay, loose restorative work and oral cancer. These checkups and cleanings should be done twice every year as part of your dental health maintenance.
