What are Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are used to replace decay that is found in one or more teeth. Tooth decay can affect patients of any age and it is often caused by genetics, poor dental hygiene and the foods and drinks that you consume. Dental fillings are made out of composite resin, which is tooth-colored and free of metal. The fillings can last for years once they are properly placed in the tooth.
Why might you need Dental Fillings?
You will need a dental filling if you have a cavity. During a typical dental exam, we will check for signs of decay. If a cavity is found, we’ll schedule you to come back in for a filling. The filling procedure is quick, easy and provides a restoration that maintains the integrity and structure of the tooth while getting rid of the underlying decay.

What makes you a good candidate for Dental Fillings?
Patients who have cavities are good candidates for dental fillings. Once the decay has been allowed to reach the inner pulp of the tooth, you will need a root canal rather than a filling. However, a filling can and should be placed at the first sign of a cavity. The sooner that you come back to have the filling placed, the smaller the hole in your tooth will be.
What can you expect with the Dental Filling procedure?
We will administer local anesthetic to make the procedure comfortable for you. Dr. Redfearn will use a drill to remove the decay from the tooth and clean it out. The hole that was made is prepped for the filling material. Composite resin is poured and placed into the hole. Dr. Redfearn then smooths the filling so that it is comfortable and seamless with the rest of the tooth. The filling is then cured with a bright light and you’ll be ready to go home.
